Stellantis has committed $4 billion to expand electric vehicle battery production capacity across North America, with new facilities planned in Ontario, Canada and Kokomo, Indiana. The investment signals the automaker's accelerated push toward electrification after facing criticism for lagging behind competitors.

The Ontario plant will be a joint venture with LG Energy Solution and will produce lithium-ion battery cells for Jeep and Ram electric models starting in 2028. The Kokomo facility expansion will add capacity for 45 gigawatt-hours annually, enough to supply approximately 600,000 vehicles per year.

CEO Carlos Tavares described the investment as essential for meeting both regulatory requirements and consumer demand. Stellantis aims to have 50 percent of its U.S. sales come from battery electric vehicles by 2030, up from its current mix of roughly 8 percent.
