Wireless EV charging has moved from concept to reality with WiTricity and Plugless launching consumer-grade inductive charging pads that power your car while it sits in the garage.
How It Works
A charging pad installed on the garage floor creates an electromagnetic field that transfers energy to a receiver mounted under the car. Simply park over the pad and charging begins automatically — no cables to plug in.
Current Products
- WiTricity Halo: 11kW wireless charging, $3,500 installed
- Plugless Level 2: 7.2kW, $2,800 installed
- Both achieve 92-93% efficiency vs 97% for wired Level 2
Compatible Vehicles
Genesis GV60 and BMW iX come with factory wireless charging support. Retrofit kits are available for Tesla Model 3/Y, Hyundai Ioniq 5, and Ford Mustang Mach-E for an additional $800-1,200.
Is It Worth It?
For convenience lovers who hate plugging in nightly, wireless charging is a game-changer. The 5-7% efficiency loss costs roughly $40-60/year in extra electricity, which most owners consider a worthwhile trade.
