ASE-certified mechanics reveal the most common winter driving habits that cause expensive damage to vehicles, many of which drivers don't realize until repair bills arrive in spring.
Costly Mistakes
1. Warming up too long. Idling more than 30 seconds wastes fuel and causes carbon buildup. Modern engines warm up faster when driven gently.
2. Ignoring tire pressure. Tires lose 1 PSI per 10°F drop. Low tires wear faster and reduce fuel economy by 3%.
3. Not washing undercarriage. Road salt corrodes brake lines, exhaust systems, and suspension components if not washed off regularly.
- Limit engine idle to 30 seconds
- Check tire pressure monthly in cold weather
- Wash undercarriage bi-weekly during salt season
- Use winter-rated wiper fluid (not water)
- Replace wiper blades before first freeze
