Toyota and Samsung SDI have simultaneously announced mass production of solid-state batteries, promising EVs with 600-mile range and 10-minute charging that could arrive in showrooms by late 2027.
The Breakthrough
Solid-state batteries replace liquid electrolytes with solid materials, doubling energy density while eliminating fire risk. Toyota's batteries achieve 500 Wh/kg compared to 250 Wh/kg for current lithium-ion cells.
Timeline
Toyota plans to debut the technology in its next-generation Lexus EV, while Samsung SDI will supply batteries to multiple automakers including BMW and Hyundai.
- 600-mile range achievable
- 10-minute 0-80% charging
- Double the energy density of current batteries
- Production vehicles expected late 2027
