The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has opened a formal investigation into the Rivian R1S SUV following 78 complaints of sudden suspension failures at highway speeds. The investigation covers approximately 45,000 vehicles from the 2023-2025 model years.
Owners report the air suspension system losing pressure without warning, causing one corner of the vehicle to drop suddenly. At highway speeds, the asymmetric ride height change can cause steering instability and make the vehicle difficult to control.
Two accidents have been attributed to the issue, including a rollover on Interstate 95 that resulted in serious injuries. Rivian has issued a software update to detect suspension pressure loss and alert drivers, but critics say a hardware fix may be necessary.
NHTSA's investigation will determine whether a formal recall is warranted. The agency is reviewing Rivian's engineering data and conducting independent testing of affected vehicles.
Rivian says it takes the issue seriously and is cooperating fully with NHTSA. The company has offered complimentary inspections at service centers for all affected model years and is developing an improved suspension component for future production.
