Kia and Hyundai have completed their nationwide rollout of the anti-theft software update that addresses the viral "Kia Boys" theft method. The update is now available at no cost for all affected vehicles.
Which Vehicles Need the Update
All 2015-2021 Hyundai and Kia models equipped with steel key ignition (no push-button start) are eligible. This covers approximately 8.3 million vehicles in the United States.
What the Update Does
The software update extends the immobilizer activation time, making the USB ignition bypass method ineffective. It also adds a window-break detection alarm and an audible theft deterrent that sounds the horn when unauthorized entry is detected.
How to Get It
- Call your local Kia or Hyundai dealer to schedule
- Takes approximately 1 hour to install
- Completely free — no appointment fee
- Some dealers offer mobile service
Insurance companies including State Farm, Progressive, and GEICO are now requiring the update for continued coverage of affected models.
