Honda Issues Major Civic Fuel Pump Recall

Honda Motor Company has announced a recall affecting approximately 800,000 Civic sedans and hatchbacks in the United States due to a defective fuel pump impeller. The recall covers 2022 through 2025 model year Civics equipped with the 1.5-liter turbocharged engine, which represents the majority of Civics sold during that period.

The defect involves a fuel pump impeller that can deform over time, restricting fuel flow to the engine and potentially causing hesitation, rough running, or complete engine stalling. The issue has been linked to 450 complaints and 12 reported accidents, though no injuries have been reported.

Which Vehicles Are Affected

Honda estimates that approximately 800,000 vehicles in the US are covered by this recall. Owners can verify their vehicle's recall status by entering their VIN on Honda's recall lookup page or the NHTSA website.

Understanding the Defect

The fuel pump impeller, a small rotating component inside the fuel pump assembly, is manufactured from a resin material that can absorb moisture and deform under certain conditions. When the impeller deforms, it can contact the pump housing, restricting fuel delivery to the engine.

Symptoms typically begin as occasional hesitation during acceleration and can progress to intermittent stalling. In the worst cases, the engine may stall without warning during driving, which is particularly dangerous at highway speeds or in heavy traffic.

The issue is more likely to occur in vehicles that frequently sit with low fuel levels in humid environments, as these conditions accelerate moisture absorption by the impeller material.

What Honda Will Do

Honda dealers will replace the fuel pump assembly with an updated unit featuring an impeller made from an improved resin formulation that is resistant to moisture absorption. The repair takes approximately 90 minutes and will be performed free of charge. Honda expects to begin mailing recall notices to affected owners in late April 2026, with parts available immediately at most dealerships.

What to Do If You Are Affected

If you own an affected Civic, check your recall status and schedule an appointment with your Honda dealer. If you are experiencing any symptoms such as engine hesitation, rough idling, or stalling, avoid driving on highways until the repair is completed. Keep your fuel tank at least half full, as this reduces the likelihood of the problem manifesting before your repair appointment. If your engine stalls while driving, activate your hazard lights immediately, steer safely to the shoulder, and call for roadside assistance.
