Dealers push extended warranties hard because they're enormously profitable — for the dealer. A veteran mechanic with 25 years of experience shares when they're worth it and when they're a waste.
When They're Worth It
- Luxury vehicles (BMW, Mercedes, Land Rover): Repair costs are astronomical. A single transmission repair can cost $6,000-$12,000.
- Vehicles known for reliability issues: Check Consumer Reports reliability ratings. If it's below average, consider coverage.
- If you keep cars 7+ years: Major components (transmission, AC compressor) tend to fail in years 6-10.
When They're a Waste
- Toyota, Honda, Mazda: These brands are so reliable that you'll likely never use the warranty.
- If you trade in every 3-4 years: Factory warranty covers most issues.
- Dealer-sold warranties: Overpriced by 50-100%. If you want one, buy from a third party (Endurance, CARCHEX) for much less.
The Math
Average extended warranty cost: $2,500. Average claim payout: $1,200. The house always wins — unless you're in the minority that needs a major repair.
