Despite improved inventory, some dealers are still adding $2,000-$10,000 in "market adjustments" to popular models. Here's how to avoid overpaying.
Models Still Seeing Markups
- Toyota Land Cruiser: $5,000-$15,000 over MSRP
- Porsche 911: $10,000-$25,000 over
- Tesla Model 2 (pre-orders): Dealers can't mark up (direct sales), but watch for accessories padding
- Honda Civic Type R: $3,000-$8,000 over
How to Pay MSRP or Less
1. Get quotes from 5+ dealers via email. Don't walk in — negotiate remotely first. Dealers 50-100 miles away are often cheaper.
2. Use Costco Auto Program or TrueCar for pre-negotiated pricing below MSRP on many models.
3. Order from the factory. Most brands let you custom-order at MSRP. Wait time is 6-12 weeks but you get exactly what you want at the correct price.
4. Check markup trackers. Sites like Markups.org crowdsource dealer pricing transparency.
