Subaru invited us to tackle the legendary Rubicon Trail in the new 2027 Forester Wilderness, and the little crossover proved more capable than anyone expected. With 9.6 inches of ground clearance, skid plates, and a retuned all-wheel-drive system with a locking rear differential, it scrambled over granite boulders that would stop most competitors.
The turbocharged 2.4-liter boxer engine delivers 260 horsepower and 277 lb-ft of torque, providing ample power for steep climbs. Crawl control and hill descent assist worked flawlessly throughout our two-day adventure.
At $39,995, the Forester Wilderness undercuts the Jeep Cherokee Trailhawk by nearly $5,000 while offering comparable off-road hardware.
